Justin Tang/The Canadian Press/AP/FILECanadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said his government is taking the vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing “extremely seriously,” and is receiving regular updates from US authorities, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and border service agencies. “This is obviously a very serious situation,” the minister said, but would not speculate on the “origin” of the incident or fatalities due to its "evolving" nature. He and the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will receive further updates in the “coming moments," he said. Trudeau echoed the minister's sentiments and said the explosion at is “obviously a very serious situation” and additional measures are being "contemplated and activated."

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said that Zhao Wei of China’s consulate-general’s office in Toronto was declared “persona non grata.” A Canadian official said Mr. Zhao now has five days to leave the country.

That makes it unlikely that anyone would challenge any "policy mistakes" that Xi makes which could hamper growth of the tech sector, Xin Sun, senior lecturer in Chinese and East Asian business, at King's College London said. Under Xi's leadership, China has implemented a raft of policy that has tightened regulation on the tech sector in areas from data protection to governing the way in which algorithms can be used. "Tech stocks have never been the best friend of Xi and it's clear that the market thinks that purge will continue," Justin Tang, head of Asian research at United First Partners, told CNBC. As part of the leadership reshuffle in China, Li Qiang, party secretary of Shanghai is expected to be made premier next year.

I think even with this Russia stuff it’s hard to see the market really rally a lot more from here ahead of the FOMC. From a geopolitical standpoint, Putin is frustrated that the war isn’t going his way and he’s threatening the west. "If it gets really, really bad, I'd expect the dollar to rise." This announcement by Putin to intensify the escalation in Ukraine definitely doesn’t help.
